PADUA TOURIST BUS

See the sights of Padova from the top deck of an open top bus. Situated in the centre of the Veneta plain is a city of great artistic and cultural traditions. This is testified by its distinguished monuments: the Chapel of the Scrovegni, the Palazzo della Ragione, the Cathedral and the University. Take a City Sightseeing bus tour around Padova and hop on and off at your leisure at stops conveniently located along the route. Don't miss a chance to see the famous Basilica of St Anthony with its impressive, original Romanesque architecture and Gothic style aisles and eastern apse, which were added in the 13th century. The interior boasts numerous monuments and the tomb of the famous sonottiero Gattamelata and his son. Take a tour of the University of Padua, see the anatomy/surgery theatre, learn of the history of Padova and take a peek at some of the most interesting areas of this historic university. Take the bus tour to Piazza delle Erbe, which is one of two squares overlooked by the Palazzo della Ragione. The building is an ancient seat of the city courts of Padua built from 1218. See its characteristic roof-shaped hull of an upside down ship. The piazza itself hosts a vegetable market by day, and by night it comes alive with locals enjoying spritz and other Italian beverages. Hop off at Prato della Valle, which is the largest square in the country and one of the largest squares in Europe. Marvel at this monumental space with its green central island, l'Isola Memmia, surrounded by a canal bordered by two rings of statues. Among the numerous statues in the square, one represents Andrea Memmo, the patrician Venetian known as the provider of Padova. Take the bus tour to Riviera Paleocopa where the Bridge of St. John was originally built in 1200, although it has been re-built several times it still maintains its original shape. The Observatory can also be found here, dominating the landscape, and is one of the most representative symbols of the city. Hop off at Piazza dei Signori and take a short walk to the magnificent Teatro Verdi, the main theatre in Padova. Take the bus tour to Piazza l.Nievo and see the city's most ancient church, the crypt of which was initiated in the late 10th century by Venetian craftsmen. Visit Piazza Garibaldi, in the centre of the city. With the progressive expansion of the pedestrian and the limited traffic area, the square has lost its original feature as a crossroads and now is only marginally crossed by traffic. At the centre of the square stands a Roman style column, which supports the statue of Our Lady of the so-called Noli, attributed to the sculptor Francesco Bonazza. Hop off at Eremitani public square. The Church of the Eremitani dates back to the 13th century and contains the tombs of Jacopo and Ubertinello da Carrara, lords of Padua. The building was largely destroyed by the Allies in World War II, because it was next to the Nazi headquarters. Visit the old monastery of the church which now houses the municipal art gallery. As a university city, Padova has a vibrant nightlife, with plenty of bars and discos to choose from. Alternatively there are there are classical music concerts, operas and theatrical performances on offer. The city is also full of cafes and restaurants, so you will never be short of places to wind down during the evening.
